Universal geniuses
If the plan is to place a hard-to-play trumpet concerto on the programme, there is really only one man for the job: Håkan Hardenberger, who has evolved in the course of his career into a kind of universal genius on the trumpet. His repertoire ranges from Haydn and Piazzolla to contemporary works. And one such – the latest composition from Scottish composer Helen Grime, who holds a professorship at the Royal Academy of Music – also features on the programme of Hardenberger’s concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Under the baton of another universal genius, its principal guest conductor François-Xavier Roth, the top London orchestra completes its residency at the Elbphilharmonie with lush orchestral scores by Richard Strauss, giving all the musicians the chance to show their mettle.
