Le Concert des Nations / Jordi Savall
Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8
Departure to the Romantic age
Jordi Savall is known far and wide as a master of the gamba and an icon of early music. The Catalan musician, who celebrated his 80th birthday last year, has recently also been conducting more and more frequently – and has been venturing further forward in music history with his chamber orchestra Le Concert des Nations, who perform on historic instruments. His Beethoven cycle, which he also presented in the Laeiszhalle, attracted great interest and excitement among local music lovers. Franz Schubert now follows – and it will be interesting to see what Savall, a meticulous researcher, teases out of the Viennese composer’s Romantic symphonies. The Hamburg guest concert features Schubert’s two most popular symphonic works: the enigmatic »Unfinished« Symphony and the »Great« Symphony in C Major, with its abundant melodies.
