Kimiko Ishizaka, piano
Die Kunst der Fuge / The Art of the Fugue
Johann Sebastian Bach’s »The Art of Fugue« is his last masterpiece, and remains a great musical puzzle to this day. The composer died before he could complete the work, and since then, many musicians have written their own interpretations of the unfinished closing fugue and thus tried to complete the cycle of 14 fugues and four canons. Among their number is the composer and pianist Kimiko Ishizaka, who after two other major Bach projects now turns her attention to »The Art of Fugue«; in this concert she plays the entire cycle, including her own version of the final fugue.
Kimiko Ishizaka came into the limelight when she won the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb (German Music Competition) together with her two brothers as members of the Ishizaka Trio. As a soloist, she made international headlines with her project »Open Goldberg Variations«, as part of which she made a licence-free recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
