Soft tone colours, a pleasant low register that causes goose bumps and a very special timbre –Kian Soltani’s Stradivari cello makes you just want to sink into its warm sound. Especially in the Mendelssohn and Schubert songs that he has put together for his programme in the Elbphilharmonie. Although his purely instrumental version does away with the text, we still feel we can understand every word, so fine is his expression and so clear his musical message.
But the cello can also be highly virtuoso and nimble, as the young artist demonstrates in the Second Cello Concerto by his fellow Austrian Joseph Haydn. Soltani is supported by a top-drawer chamber orchestra in the shape of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, which not only accompanies him with sensitivity, but also plays on its own, performing among other works a symphony by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, one of Johann Sebastian’s sons.
