Keersmaeker / Queyras / Rosas: »Mitten wir im Leben sind«
Season Opening
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello are milestones of music history and can fairly be described as the cellists’ Bible. Their inventiveness and profound beauty astonish and move us to this day. The start of the new Elbphilharmonie season offers the opportunity to experience these timeless masterpieces in an entirely different light.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, one of the most influential innovators in contemporary dance, has evolved a choreography that captures the essence of Bach’s musical style (each of the six suites is a sequence of French Baroque dances) and translates it into movement.
The music itself is played by world-famous French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, while the dancers both male and female belong to the Compagnie Rosas, with De Keersmaeker herself among their number. The result is a fascinating symbiosis of music and dance that illuminates both each individual suite and also its place in Bach’s cycle.
