Kantorei St. Markus-Hoheluft / Kantorei Niendorf / Hanse Consort
St Matthew Passion
We owe it first and foremost to Felix Mendelssohn that nowadays Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion is given hundreds of performances all over the world during Easter. In 1829 – a century after the first performance – the Hamburg-born composer revived the work and made it accessible to a broad public. Together with five soloists, a baroque orchestra and a youth choir, the Kantorei Niendorf and the Kantorei St Markus from Hoheluft tackle Bach’s epoch-making oratorio, set for larger forces than any other composition he wrote.
