It seems as if the term »bel canto« was invented specifically to describe his art: with his powerful timbre and unmistakeable voice, Juan Diego Flórez surpasses all the superlatives of »beautiful singing«. Since his outstanding 1996 debut in La Scala, Milan, at the age of 23, the Peruvian tenor has built up a storybook career with regular appearances at major opera houses and festivals all over the world.
Juan Diego Flórez’s international success notwithstanding, the appealing superstar hasn’t forgotten his origins as the son of a Peruvian folk singer, and still likes to pick up a guitar and accompany himself in simple songs and canzoni. Flórez’s recital at the Elbphilharmonie focuses entirely on Mozart and Italian bel canto.
