Music for the soul
The viol player Jordi Savall has been a leading figure in the international classical music scene for five decades – as a musician and researcher, a composer and interpreter. The star of the early music world spends hours searching for unpublished manuscripts in old monasteries and libraries, and even employs musicologists and historians. His aim is to take audiences back to a very different time. To mark Good Friday, Savall now explores the famous »last words of Jesus Christ«. With his world-class ensemble Le Concert des Nations, he presents impressive settings of the words to music by Heinrich Schütz and Joseph Haydn.
Great symbolic importance is attributed to the last words uttered by Jesus Christ on the cross in the four gospels of the evangelists. On the one hand they reflect the pain of Christ on the cross, but they also exude a sense of forgiveness, comfort and salvation. In this concert, Jordi Savall combines the two best-known settings to music. The first is by Heinrich Schütz, whose 1645 early-baroque cantata is structured like a chamber play. And the second is by Joseph Haydn, who presents the seven words in seven slow and intense instrumental movements in the Classical style. This truly is music for the soul.
