John Zorn: The Turner Études
Stephen Gosling, Piano – Reflektor John Zorn
Fingers in a twist
The British pianist Stephen Gosling has been living in New York for over 30 years and is always a safe bet when it comes to piano parts in new and contemporary music. For a long time now he has been a member of a growing circle of musicians around John Zorn, whose names are less familiar from jazz than from the world of notated music for the concert hall. In September 2019, Stephen Gosling premiered the, in part, ludicrously difficult »Turner Études« for solo piano in the Miller Theatre in New York City. The cycle owes its existence to John Zorn’s fascination with the late sketches of the British painter William Turner. A must for lovers of high-level pianistic artistry in the manner of Ligeti’s Études or the »Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus« by Olivier Messiaen.
