Jean Rondeau, harpsichord
Bach: Goldberg Variations
In silence lies greatness
Jean Rondeau is convinced that the Goldberg Variations contain not only all of Bach, but also all of music. To gain as deep and authentic an understanding as possible of this opus summum, the French star harpsichordist has studied Bach’s notes very intensively. The result: a completely new view of the internal workings of this variation cosmos.
»The first thing I heard when I opened the window to the Goldberg Variations was the silence,« says Rondeau. »They are an ode to silence.« Accordingly, Rondeau plays this music with a rare tenderness and a keen feeling for nuance.
And he thereby bolsters his reputation as one of the most exciting harpsichord players in the early-music scene. »All that is left for me to do is to invite you to experience these Goldberg Variations,« says Rondeau. »To delve into their moments of serenity – an experience in which you may find a feeling of intimacy, purity and truth.«
