Anyone keen to locate the person behind the name of this young quintet shouldn’t get his hopes up: »Hans Anselm« is neither a well-known person nor a musical role model, but a kind of imaginary friend who unites the five musicians and has accompanied them from the outset. And the Hans Anselm Quintet also named their first album after this »Obscure Companion«; the album was released in the spring of 2018 and the band is now touring with it. The musicians’ individuality and love of improvisation notwithstanding, the compositions by pianist Anna Wohlfahrt and guitarist Benedikt Schnitzler always place the overall ensemble sound to the fore, telling a variety of tales that alternate between euphoria and melancholy.
