If it’s true that the key difference between classical music and jazz is not so much the contrast between composition and improvisation, but the focus on the flow of melodic lines versus rhythmical pulse, then it was only a matter of time before the Hamburg-based trombonist Lisa Stick would seek an encounter with a classical string ensemble – because a clear penchant for melodic lines characterises the music in all her previous ventures.

With the Lisa Stick Septet, the trombonist now attempts to boil the different ways of experiencing the playful flow – the linear-melodic approach and the physical, pulse-based one – down to a common denominator that does justice to both experiences. She is supported in that endeavour by the drummer Dirk Achim Dhonau, the double bass player Christian Müller and the cellist Constantin Pritz – three musicians who also play in her current quintet – as well as by the string quartet in which Pritz works with the violinists Vera Schmidt and Gillian Maggoutas, and Audrey Bashore on the viola.

Jazz at the Kulturcafé is a monthly event presenting the most promising upcoming artists in the jazz and singer-songwriter scene. It is the perfect experimental platform for musicians and bands from Hamburg and all over the country. The atmosphere is laid back – and admission is free!
