Even in a traditional jazz centre like New York City, it is important to recall the history of jazz from time to time, an art form now over a hundred years old. This was what motivated the creation of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO). Wynton Marsalis has been artistic director since 1991. The trumpeter was born in New Orleans in 1961, and is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary jazz since the early 1980s. Marsalis has played with jazz greats like Art Blakey und Herbie Hancock, and has long since progressed beyond his role models Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis to establish his own style.
