International Mendelssohn Festival
»Opening concert«
Intense pain and pure joie de vivre
In the opening concert of the International Mendelssohn Festival, four composers meet at eye level: the festival opens with the only quartet in a minor key among Mozart’s ten great string quartets. A biographic background is attributed to the atmospheric String Quartet in D minor: scholars see a connection between the sounds of pain in the minuet and the pregnancy and delivery of Mozart’s wife Constanze, which they believe Mozart could hear from the adjoining room.
This is open to dispute, but the autobiographic connection in the Schubert Fantasy that follows is clear. This is the ninth time that the International Mendelssohn Festival (IMF) is being held in Hamburg. Featuring an exclusive selection of chamber music played by international artists whom a special tradition links to the festival.
