»Il prigioniero«: NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester

2. Internationales Musikfest Hamburg

Torture through hope – the prisoner in Luigi Dallapiccola’s opera »Il prigioniero« is at the mercy of an eleged kindly gaoler. Will he ever be given the chance to taste freedom again or is it all a cruel illusion? NDR Principal Conductor Thomas Hengelbrock, joined by the NDR Symphony Orchestra, prize-winning choirs and powerful soloists, sets this 50-minute »passion-opera« side by side with Bach’s opening chorus »Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen (Come, you daughters, help me to lament)« from the »St Matthew Passion«.

A short opera originally intended for radio, »The Prisoner« takes place in the time of the inquisition under King Philip II of Spain. Dallapiccola, himself having felt the effects of the brutal repressions of a totalitarian regime in 1938 on his own body, depicts freedom as humanity’s utopian fantasy in this up-to-date drama composed at the end of the Second World War. As one of the most significant innovators of Italian modernism, Dallapiccola has succeeded in creating an individual musical synthesis using a combination of twelve-tone-technique and traditional vocal elements of Italian classical opera.
