Homage to Dmitri Shostakovich

Igor Levit is coming to the Elbphilharmonie in March to perform a truly brilliant work: »Passacaglia on DSCH« by the Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson is a homage to Dmitri Shostakovich. »I can’t remember ever in my entire life working on a piece that was so challenging on an intellectual and pianistic level«, reveals Levit. Based on the sequence D-E♭-C-B, Shostakovich’s musical signature, Stevenson develops a passacaglia in over 300 variations that breaks with both stylistic and formal conventions.

In this special piano recital, the audience can see for themselves how Levit is more than a match for this work, which is possibly the longest single-movement piece for solo piano ever composed, and experience how he conveys both its political and emotional dimensions.
