Ibrahim Maalouf
Reflektor Angélique Kidjo / Fokus Jazz Trumpet
Trumpet tales
At the age of 40, Ibrahim Maalouf has already released some 20 albums, so a kind of self-retrospective seems in order. To mark his 40th birthday in autumn 2020, the French-Lebanese trumpeter brought out the album »40 Melodies«, on which he joins forces with his longstanding companion, Belgian guitarist François Delporte, to reinterpret 40 songs from his career, thus returning to his musical roots.
The young Maalouf came to France as a refugee from the Lebanese Civil War. He started by studying classical trumpet in Paris, but then turned increasingly to jazz and Arab music. His own compositions are elegant and graceful, something that comes out particularly well when he plays in a duet with the sensitive guitarist Delporte.
The fact that Angélique Kidjo is giving Maalouf the chance to appear as a trumpeter as well in the intimate setting of her »Reflektor« festival is all the more positive: he was scheduled to appear at the Elbphilharmonie a year ago, but the concert had to be cancelled owing to coronavirus.
