Birdcalls and soundscapes
Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard had just turned twelve when he got to know Olivier Messiaen. He rapidly became one of the preferred interpreters of the great French composer’s music and a passionate champion of contemporary music. Together with the hr Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor and composer Brad Lubman, Aimard performs a varied programme at the Elbphilharmonie which is devoted entirely to music from the second half of the 20th century.
The concert presents four completely different musical landscapes. From the contrasting sound worlds of George Crumb through Augusta Read Thomas’s poetic seascapes to the lavish orchestral splendour of Claude Vivier’s »Orion«, the full gamut of modern music is on show here. A special position in the programme is occupied by Messiaen’s »Le réveil des oiseaux« – the musical material of this piano concerto is basely entirely on birdcalls. In the hands of Pierre-Laurent Aimard, whose »lively and colourful playing« is popular with critics and audiences alike, the work, first performed in 1953, evolves a very special magic.
