The Czech composer Josef Suk came from a humble background. His exceptional talent was recognised at an early age, notably by Antonín Dvořák, who became his teacher and later his father-in-law. But over a period of twelve months in 1904/05, fate dealt Suk a cruel hand: first he lost his father-in-law, then his young wife Ottilie. Expressed through music, the grief and trauma would lead to Suk’s breakthrough as a composer.
It was in this period that Josef Suk composed his »Asrael« Symphony, whose dramatic musical language is reminiscent of Mahler’s. Soon thereafter he wrote »A Summer’s Tale«, a piece that features a luminous, impressionistic sensuousness in which nightmares transform into hope and yearning.
Alongside Josef Suk, the sixth Philharmonic Concert also includes Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, which was premiered in 1932 and in which Ravel was already heavily influenced by the new jazz trend. Performing the concerto is the young French pianist Lucas Debargue, who won the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in 2016 »out of nowhere« and who has since come to be regarded as one of the most promising pianists of his generation.
