Brahms’s First Symphony is a bold first essay in the genre. It took the composer a whole 14 years to overcome the mighty shadow thrown by Beethoven and present the work to the public in 1876. Clara Schumann was surprised and delighted by the result, calling the symphony »strong and full of wondrous beauty«.
