Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Thomas Zehetmair
Haydn / Carter / Beethoven
Heinz Holliger and Thomas Zehetmair – two remarkably gifted artists: the latter a violinist, conductor, teacher and chamber musician of literally existentialist intensity, and the former a composer, conductor and oboist who often served contemporary fellow composers. Back in 1987, Holliger gave the first performance of Elliott Carter’s Oboe Concerto.
Carter, who died a few years ago at the age of 103 and was much fêted in Germany particularly in his last years, believed firmly in a »transcontinental musical language« in the spirit of the European tradition. Always good for a surprise, Carter declared in the early 1980s: »I want my music to be like Mozart’s… - happy and sad at the same time, tragic in its funniest moments. Minor in major, both passionate and objective.«
