Gilberto Gil has been one of Brazil’s most important and diverse artists for decades. Together with his companion Caetano Veloso, he was prompted by the military dictatorship towards the end of the 1960s to found the political and cultural movement Tropicalismo. This in turn gave rise to a new musical style that mixed traditional Brazilian elements with influences from modern rock and pop music.
