With Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Nando Reis, a good 50 years of Brazilian music history makes an exclusive guest appearance in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. »Trinca des Ases« (Three Aces) is the title of the programme that the three artists have been touring with since 2016. And the name is a statement: Gil and Costa have had a strong influence on Brazilian music since the 1960s, and are now among the best-known and most successful musicians in South America.
In the 1960s Gilberto Gil expanded the bossa nova of his predecessors to include elements of rock’n’roll, reggae and pop, and was one of the leading lights of the »Tropicalismo« movement, which was responsible for radical changes, both musical and political, at the time. During the years of the military dictatorship, he had to leave the country, but after his return from exile resumed his political activity, and was even appointed Brazil’s Minister of Culture in 2003.
