Herbert von Karajan once called him »the world’s best violinist«. Gidon Kremer has long reached the stage where there’s nothing left to prove. And yet that is exactly what he keeps doing: he proves that it’s worth exploring contemporary and forgotten works, in addition to playing the familiar repertoire.

Around the end of the 1980s Kremer met the great post-war avant-gardist Luigi Nono. Using recordings the pair had made in a studio, Nono developed audio tracks, with which Kremer later, in concert, entered into an ever-changing chamber music dialogue. »La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura« was the name of the resulting work for violin, live electronics and spatial effects, during performances of which Kremer would roam around the concert hall. The violinist and sound director are in a constant exchange, making each performance a unique experience.

The composer Mieczysław Weinberg died in Moscow in 1996, a death that went almost unnoticed by the public. The discovery, or rediscovery, of his oeuvre over the last few years has been one of the greatest gains for the repertoire of twentieth century music. Kremer describes the music of the composer, whose life was lived under the shadow of two totalitarian regimes, as »a source of unbounded inspiration«.
