Thinking outside all genre boxes

Be it as the guitarist of his band The National or as the composer of contemporary orchestral scores and film soundtracks: from his chosen home of Paris the American all-rounder Bryce Dessner makes many different musical genres his own, as he demonstrated comprehensively at his 2017 »Reflektor« festival at the Elbphilharmonie. He has written a violin concerto especially for his good friend the Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto, a musician who thinks well outside all genre boxes, and this work is on the programme of the legendary Philharmonia Orchestra of London when they visit Hamburg.

Dessner’s pluralistic approach forms a delightful contrast to a concert hall classic now over 200 years old, Beethoven’s »Pastoral«. In this, his sixth essay in the symphonic genre, the composer literally took his cue from nature. From the »awakening of cheerful feelings on arrival in the countryside« to the dramatic thunderstorm, the score is inspired by nature, and the music has lost none of its vividness since the premiere in 1808.
