The Art of Music Education

What happens when you invite musicians from very different musical cultures to perform on the same stage? Very simple: they work together to develop a new collective sound. The musicians of Hamburg’s Ensemble Resonanz have long been known for their cosmopolitan approach. No surprise, then, to see them collaborating with Derya Yildirim, an Anatolian singer and multi-instrumentalist from Hamburg. Arabic lutes blend with European strings, accompanied by African singing and guitar interludes by Patrick Kabré from Burkina Faso, and percussion by Sven Kacirek. The first half of the concert features representatives from no less than three different cultural spheres collaborating on stage.

After the interval, cultural sphere number four – Bavaria – conquers the stage. Taking their native musical tradition, Bavarian brass music, as a point of departure, the virtuosic musicians of Unterbiberger Hofmusik travel to foreign pastures, and the distinction between folk and formal music becomes blurred, jazz is mixed with influences from all four corners of the globe.

This intercultural concert shares key themes with a three-day conference held in the nearby Körber Foundation. The »Art of Music Education« conference is an exploration of the role cultural institutions can play in cosmopolitan urban societies. What defines a multi-diverse music city? In this concert, the musicians on the programme offer one possible answer.
