Frielinghaus Ensemble
New Year’s Concert
After a successful Elbphilharmonie debut in 2018, the ensemble headed by violinist Gustav Frielinghaus returns in 2019 for a guest performance in the Recital Hall. Rossini’s »Sonate a quattro«, an ingenious early work, is the central piece in the concert, featuring the unusual combination of two violins, cello and double bass – chamber music with operatic flair, inspired by the divertimenti of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Said to have been written in just a few days for a house concert, it is the earliest surviving composition by Rossini. As »intermezzi« that form a contrast to Rossini’s quartets, the ensemble also performs dances by Béla Bartók and Maurice Ravel’s duo »Sonate en quatre parties« for violin and cello.
