Film & Music: Metropolis
Hamburg International Music Festival
Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film »Metropolis« is not only regarded as one of the first science fiction films of all time, it was also the first film to be inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World register. That was a well-deserved accolade: with his dystopian epic about a distinctly two-tier society in a futuristic city, Lang set aesthetic and technical benchmarks that still impress to this day. It was not until 2010 that once-destroyed parts of the original version could be reconstructed. The Argentinian director and composer Martin Matalon has written new film music for this spectacular long version, which he presents live at the music festival with Ensemble Modern.
