Film & Music: »Frau im Mond« / »Woman in the Moon«
Hamburg International Music Festival
Fritz Lang’s 1929 science-fiction drama »Frau im Mond« (Woman in the Moon) went down in German film history as one of the last great silent films to be made. The film is based on a novel by Thea von Harbou and tells the early dream of a mission to the moon, coupling it with a heart-rending love story. Incidentally, the director Lang invented the countdown in this film that was later actually used for space missions. American conductor and composer Timothy Brock specialises in musical accompaniment for silent movies. He has written a new soundtrack for »Frau im Mond« which he performs live with the Symphoniker Hamburg to accompany a showing of the film at the music festival.
