Family Prayers with J. S. Bach
Festival »Lux aeterna«
When spiritual music is under discussion, Johann Sebastian Bach must not be absent. In addition to countless cantatas, passions and organ works for church use, he also wrote pious vocal pieces for use at family prayers that speak directly to the soul. At the Elbphilharmonie, two of today’s most sought-after singers perform these personal and intimate pieces: Anna Lucia Richter and Georg Nigl, accompanied by a top-quality chamber ensemble on historic instruments.
For their Baroque song recital, Richter and Nigl have chosen pieces from the songbook that Bach wrote together with the cantor Georg Christian Schemelli. Their almost aria-like character sets them apart from the church chorales and hymns for the congregation customary in Bach’s day. The recital also features songs from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach that Bach wrote for his second wife and compiled in a two manuscript notebooks for her. The intimate atmosphere of the Recital Hall affords the chance to experience a very personal side of Bach rarely heard in the concert hall.
