Saunders: Hauch#2 – Portrait Rebecca Saunders
Open-heart surgery
Rebecca Saunders is the surgeon of contemporary composers. She operates on the open heart of music – with frequencies, timbres and silence. »I hold the sounds and noises in my hands, feeling their potential between my palms, weighing them«, says the London-born composer. In Saunders’ works, even the rests exude a terrific intensity. Her work »Hauch«, in which dance and music merge, is now being performed in the Elbphilharmonie for the first time.
»I often write very choleric music«, explains Saunders. »In this work I wanted to explore the world of pianissimo.« In short episodes, Ensemble Modern models how a »Hauch« (trace/wisp/hint) might sound. The violin chirps on the lowest strings, while the oboe, triangle and double bass evoke a vitreous song. Music »like a shadow, an aura, a shimmering below the surface«, transforms into an extraordinary choreography by the dancers of the CocoonDance Company.
