English Chamber Orchestra / Albrecht Mayer
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
Baroque London
When the »English Chamber Orchestra« was formed in 1948, it specialised in early music, but it has since gone on to significantly expand its repertoire. It now boasts an extensive discography of 860 releases featuring more than 1,500 works by 400 composers. The ensemble’s musicians can therefore pick from an embarrassment of riches when it comes to selecting works for their debut at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Full of passion and devotion, the English Chamber Orchestra and the star oboist Albrecht Mayer have created a programme that explores »London« in a new and special way. They perform works by composers who have shaped London’s musical life from the Baroque age to the mid-twentieth century.
One of those composers is Michael Tippett, who, in his »Concerto for Double String Orchestra«, showcases the vivid sound of a string orchestra with Welsh folk songs and Elizabethan dance rhythms. Albrecht Mayer, in turn, demonstrates the refined, soft sound of the oboe d’amore in Handel’s Concerto »Verdi prati« from the opera »Alcina«, and in works by Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
