Elisabeth Leonskaja & Belcea Quartet
Haydn / Ligeti / Brahms
The musicians of the Belcea Quartet are not restricted by geographic boundaries: founded in 1994 at London’s Royal College of Music, the quartet is primarily based in the UK. However, with the Romanian violinist Corina Belcea, the Polish violist Krzysztof Chorzelski and the French musicians Axel Schacher on the violin and Antoine Lederlin on the cello, all four musicians bring different cultural influences into the ensemble. With works by Haydn, Ligeti and Brahms, the full richness of their artistic ability can be heard in this evening’s programme.
For the second part of the concert, the Belcea Quartet expands to a quintet to accommodate the famous pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja. On Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, Clara Schumann once wrote: »After playing the work, I feel as if I have read a great tragic story.«
