Elīna Garanča
Hamburg International Music Festival
»You can’t be truly open on the stage, any more than you can in real life«: a motto that doesn’t fit a diva at all, which is why it’s perfect for Elīna Garanča. For despite all the glamour, the Latvian mezzo-soprano still has her feet planted firmly on the ground: her lightning career has taken her in the space of a few years from the rural town of Meiningen to the Metropolitan Opera, but she has never forgotten her roots.
Thus it’s fair to assume that it’s no contradiction for her to first sing Bizet’s seductive Carmen, then shortly after that to shine in breeches parts.
In the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall Garanča traces her musical development at the side of her husband Karel Mark Chichon – from bel canto to the Spanish repertoire that she has grown very fond of since she established a second home in Málaga.
