Dresden Philharmonic / Daniel Müller-Schott / Michael Sanderling
Schumann / Dvořák
In Germany’s Rhineland region, the month of December lies in the so-called »fifth season«, the vernacular term for the carnival season. The Dresden Philharmonic reminds us of this at its Elbphilharmonie debut under the baton of principal conductor Michael Sanderling: extracts from Schumann’s »Carnaval« and Dvořák’s Carnival Overture provide the framework for Schumann’s »Rhenish Symphony« as well as his Cello Concerto, which he likewise wrote during his Düsseldorf years. The solo part in the concerto is closely interwoven with the orchestra, and corresponded to the composer’s ideal of a musical dialogue. For Daniel Müller-Schott, himself a keen chamber musician, it offers the perfect opportunity to place his instrumental virtuosity entirely at the service of the music as a whole.
