»Ganz Wien« Festival
Austria was on the periphery of the pop-culture universe until he came along and turned things on their head simply by taking out his guitar in a smoky bar and musing with great charm about life. In the process he had a greater impact than he may have expected – indeed, in 2008 Der Nino aus Wien quite nonchalantly reinvented the genre of the Wienerlied.
He never pretends to be something he isn’t. His artist name is the best example of that: Nino Mandl, born and bred in one of the outlying districts of the Austrian capital, is Der Nino aus Wien (Nino from Vienna). He sings about the banalities of everyday life, and turns them into great pieces of music – but never going beyond the necessary in terms of instrumentation. Der Nino aus Wien never exaggerates, he simply appreciates the simple and authentic things in life – ideally things he has experienced himself first hand.
The »Ganz Wien« festival brings the Wienerlied (Viennese song) in all its forms to the stages of the Elbphilharmonie. A line-up of the contemporary scene’s most exciting artists exudes original Viennese flair and demonstrates the musical treasures the Austrian capital has to offer.
