»Pianomania« – Franz Schubert / Friedrich Liszt
Philosophical dialogue on 88 keys
In one uninterrupted arc of 30 minutes, Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor covers the full spectrum of human emotion. In the 2023/24 season, the »Pianomania« series presents five concerts with various programmes centred around this milestone of Romantic piano music. Denis Kozhukin, who is »special even in a day when keyboard virtuosos are thick on the ground« (Chicago Tribune), is the soloist in the second concert.
Kozhukin combines Liszt’s revolutionary work with another sonata that has an equally large arc and a deeply profound expressiveness: Schubert’s final Piano Sonata in B Flat Major. The juxtaposition of the two works yields a philosophical dialogue on 88 keys in which Kozhukin can show off the entire spectrum of his abilities – from deep introspection and expansive melodic arcs to sparkling light-footedness and an overpowering pianistic thunder.
