David Helbock’s Random/Control
Jazz Piano
Gleefully Anarchic Jazz from Austria
The band of Austrian pianist David Helbock is called Random/Control. The name is programmatic, but the band can also be described as spontaneous, gleefully anarchic and playfully bold. When playing live, the trio sometimes exchange instruments, with Andreas Broger and Johannes Bär on various woodwind and brass instruments, and they often produce wild a-cappella vocals. This music features unusual rhythms and melodies, influenced by jazz greats such as the eccentric piano genius Thelonious Monk and the avant-garde jazz composer Sun Ra.
