The perfect duo

Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve have been playing together in various constellations for 46 years. When the singer-songwriter and his pianist share the stage, a fresh symbiotic fusion of two free spirits emerges every time. One of many things they share is the gift of being able to sing and play each song as if it will be the last thing they will ever do.

They were (and are) the backbone of Costello’s rowdy bands »The Attractions« and »The Imposters«; they performed together in those great shows with the legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach, with whom Costello wrote a wonderful album, and they also, as in this case in the Elbphilharmonie, perform as a pair. Sometimes they do so with additional instruments, expanding the sound to that of a band, and sometimes just with guitars and Nieve on the piano.

Over the course of his career, Costello has covered pretty much the entire musical terrain, from raw punk and Shakespearean sonnets to string-quartet sounds. In this highly anticipated evening with his alter ego in the Grand Hall, the master is expected to pick from his entire oeuvre to delight all his fans, young and old, with his best songs.
