Concerts for Hamburg
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Håkan Hardenberger
Modest Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition« has become a true concert evergreen worldwide, thanks not least to its vivid musical depiction of drawings by a painter who was friends with Mussorgsky – among the pieces is the comical »Ballet of the Unhatched Chickens«. The trumpet concerto »Nobody Knows De Trouble I See« likewise has significance beyond the realm of music, albeit a much more serious one: Bernd Alois Zimmermann wrote the work as a statement against racism in the USA, incorporating into the score African-American music such as the spiritual of the title.
