Chorus sine nomine: Misa Criolla
Transatlantic Festival
The Argentine composer and pianist Ariel Ramirez (1921–2010) had close links with Europe and Germany. His work is deeply rooted in the musical tradition of Latin America, and he mixes European and Latin American elements in his »Creole Mass« for solo voice, choir, percussion, piano and the traditional instruments of the Andes. The piece is one of the most popular works of Christian music in Latin America.
Composed shortly after the Second Vatican Council of 1962, which permitted the use of the vernacular as a liturgical language, the mass is based on a Castilian text that addresses the elements of the Roman Catholic liturgy. Each movement is associated with a Latin American dance or rhythm; each one is moving and emotional in its own way, from the slow-paced waltz of the Kyrie to the jubilant, dance-like Credo to the poignant »Danos la paz« (Dona nobis pacem / Grant us peace).
The Misa Criolla is performed in the Elbphilharmonie by the Chorus sine nomine, conducted by Johannes Hiemetsberger. Founded in 1991, the Vienna-based choir is known as one of Austria’s leading vocal ensembles. The Chorus sine nomine regularly appears at prestigious international festivals and has won numerous awards.
