Description

The »Greatest Hits« Festival opens with a pre-eminent ensemble specialising in contemporary music: the Ensemble intercontemporain. Led by Matthias Pintscher, conductor of this 31 soloist-strong top-class chamber orchestra since 2013, it performs one of the most significant works of its founder Pierre Boulez.

The late Pierre Boulez, who died in early 2016 at the age of 90, was one of the most important musicians of the 20th century - as composer as well as conductor, as initiator and founder of influential institutions. In 1976, he founded the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris, which was to become the prototype of numerous ensembles fully committed to and skilfully mastering the newest forms of music. At Kampnagel, it presents one of Boulez’s typical »works in progress«, the perpetually revised »Sur Incises« for three pianos, three harps and three percussionists.

But first, Matthias Pintscher conducts one of his own creations: »Sonic Eclipse« for trumpet, horn and ensemble, a confrontation of contoured gestures and sophisticated details.
