Chamber Music Concert / Symphoniker Hamburg
»Bruckner in Miniature«
Bruckner and chamber music? As a composer of massive symphonies, it is difficult to connect him with this genre. Nevertheless, there it is: Bruckner’s string quartet is a work with a splendid architecture. He wrote it at the insistence of violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who later complained at the rehearsal about his sore fingers. Oh well, that’s what you get! The piece, however, was a tremendous success. It is preceded by a string quartet with the unusual constellation of two violas: Arensky’s gripping instrumental requiem in memory of Peter I. Tchaikovsky.
