Spine-chilling sounds introduce the overture to Mozart’s famous opera »Don Giovanni«. The composer’s interpretation of the classic tale about notorious womaniser Don Juan has even been called »the opera to end all operas«. The overture, which Mozart allegedly dashed off only the night before the premiere, contains the essence of the whole drama: joie de vivre and repentance, free love and serious consequences.
Sergei Rachmaninov completed his Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini in 1934 – at a time when the New Music had long since brought about radical changes. The Rhapsody represents a final blaze of light from musical Romanticism, written by the 60-year-old Rachmaninov in his Swiss exile. His original motif ideas give the piano the chance to display its full range of colour, romantic expression and virtuosity.
Johannes Brahms hesitated to tackle the ultimate musical genre, the symphony, for years and years: not until 1876 did the composer complete his First Symphony after long and painstaking preparations. The deep earnest and complex treatment of the motifs did not only meet with approval in contemporary reviews: at the time, the work was »respected rather than loved«. But with this work, Brahms managed to emerge from the colossal shadow cast by Beethoven and to find a style at once inspired and entirely his own.
