»Destination Rachmaninov« – the poetic title of Daniil Trifonov’s latest album contains a hint of destiny. This exceptional Russian pianist, who last appeared at the Elbphilharmonie with a truly staggering recital in the ProArte series, plunges into the depths of his idol’s musical universe, getting as close to him as any interpreter can and creating in the process a very individual musical experience: typical Trifonov! The Californian orchestra opens the evening with a novelty from the pen of its longstanding music director: Michael Tilson Thomas’s »Lope« shows again that the conductor is also a composer with a sense of humour.
