Transfigured escapism and painful nostalgia: these are the contradictory moods in the string sextet from the opera »Capriccio« and in the »Metamorphoses« by Richard Strauss, which the composer sets with his customary refinement. The strings of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra juxtapose Strauss’s Late Romantic world with the second string sextet by Johannes Brahms, a piece that combines transparency and tonal magic with fiery enthusiasm and contrapuntal strictness.
