Young orchestral talents meet top violinist
The creme de la creme of Germany’s young orchestral musicians meet one of the most high-profile virtuosos of our time. The Bundesjugendorchester brings together talented young musicians from all over Germany to form a brilliant orchestra that performs the best of the symphonic repertoire with youthful elan. The soloist for the evening is probably also the orchestra’s most famous alumnus: star violinist Christian Tetzlaff.
The Italian conductor Francesco Angelico opens the evening with a work by his compatriot Luigi Dallapiccola: the mysterious Variazioni per orchestra. The Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra by the Czech composer Josef Suk – son-in-law to Antonín Dvořák – then provides Tetzlaff with an opportunity to demonstrate his technical ability and narrative skill.
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 is the concert’s dramatic finale. The symphonic blockbuster deals in thrilling style with a key event in Russian history: the St Petersburg Bloody Sunday of 1905, when the Tsar’s soldiers shot at unarmed demonstrators – a precursor to the Communist October Revolution of 1917.
