Birdman
Elbphilharmonie Summer
When Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu was working on his film »Birdman«, a brilliant showbiz comedy with Michael Keaton in the lead role, he entrusted his countryman Antonio Sánchez with the job of writing the soundtrack. As an experienced film-maker (»Babel«, »The Revenant«), Iñárritu obviously knew the importance of inner rhythm, especially in the case of a comedy that is being shot as if in a single take. Jazz drummer Sánchez, born in 1971 and now a New York resident, spent years touring with the Pat Metheny Group; his abstract percussion patterns lend »Birdman« the necessary rhythmic structure. The different musical themes are tailored to fit the main characters of the 2014 movie, which was awarded four Oscars. »Birdman« is an example of a modern film where the visuals and the music form an inseparable whole. At the concert in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, Antonio Sánchez plays his unusual score live to accompany the film.
