Nation as an identity: hardly any composer better realised the ideal of Russian music than Modest Mussorgsky. Even today, his »Pictures at an Exhibition« is regarded as a pinnacle in the musical representation of the language and folklore of Russia. In France, Saint- Saëns and Ravel followed suit by experimenting with French traditions in their works. Even a tonal language can be considered a native language.
