Barokksolistene
»The Alehouse Sessions« / Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
Folk music, sea shanties and Henry Purcell
Did the English composer Henry Purcell go to the pub in the evenings for a pint of ale? We can’t say for sure, but it seems likely. »Purcell composed music for church feasts, for the royal court, for public ceremonies, private devotions and pleasant entertainment: music fit for the solemnity of Westminster Abbey and the splendour of the royal chapel – but also popular melodies for the rough humour of the tavern and the catch clubs«, says Bjarte Eike, the artistic director of Barokksolistene.
In its »Alehouse Sessions«, the Norwegian ensemble, which plays on historic instruments, revives the music that was played in English taverns in the seventeenth century, from Purcell to drinking songs and sea shanties – rough, rustic and more than a little beery. A Baroque jamming session with a pub atmosphere. Or as Barokksolistene would say: »It’s just old pop music!«
